Myself and Jim Starzynski, Director, Advanced Engineering & Principal Audio Engineer, NBC Universal. Jim and I have a long history going back to him being a favorite instructor at Brookdale in the early '80s. We worked together at Press Broadcasting Company, which was located on the top floor of the former Asbury Park Press building in Asbury Park, NJ. He went on to rise through the ranks at NBC as did I at Brookdale. In January 2011 I was at 30 Rock attending a joint SMPTE/AES/IEEE meeting on Audio Loudness Standards, Measurements, and Control in a Broadcast Environment as well as the ramifications of recently signed into law CALM(Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation) Act. Jim was the keynote speaker. I have for some time been interested in the creation of standards for audio for digital television, and interestingly enough Jim is one of the main people working on what is now known as ATSC A/85 Recommended Practice (RP) ‘Techniques for Establishing and Maintaining Audio Loudness for Digital Television. A very interesting related presentation is found on the Cinema Audio Society website, "What Happened To My Mix?" Jim's work with the ATSC was mentioned quite prominently during this presentation as well.

By the way this was the day the "handing over the keys" from GE to Comcast occurred.

UPDATE: Jim received the ATSC's Lechner Award for his leadership in developing A/85.

The release of Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising" album, July 30 2002 at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey. NBC's "Today" show was there to cover the event. I was there to capture some footage for Brookdale Television.

January 2011 marked the opening of Brookdale Community College's refurbished Collins Arena and new Fitness Center. There was an accompanying sound system upgrade in both facilities, featuring a CobraNet networked audio system featuring Biamp Audia DSP and Allen & Heath iLive consoles. Power amps are Crown and speaker cabinets are EV and EAW. System design was by Washington Professional Systems.

2006 Mac Pro 1,1 Octocore Upgrade

I recently acquired a first generation Mac Pro for my studio. Ever since these Macs were introduced I was intrigued by the fact that the processors were socketed much like the Macs of old, offering an upgrade path. This Mac originally was a Quad-Core Intel Xeon Woodcrest X515o 2.66GHz system. My plan was to upgrade it to a Octo-Core system using either a pair of Intel Xeon Clovertown X5355 2.66GHz or X5365 3.0GHz Quad-Core processors. This swap is widely detailed on sites such as Hardmac, Anandtech, and Accelerate Your Macintosh.

I found a pair of X5355's for a decent price on eBay. X5365's were just too expensive... one auction ended with the pair going for just north of $1000! I'll keep looking though, always striving to achieve the highest possible performance... :-)

In April of 2010 we began the process of refitting the Audio Production Services recording studio which had been in operation since 1989. Formerly based on an Amek Angela 36X24 console and Otari MX-80 24-track with Dolby SR, we decided to go digital, selecting a Yamaha DM2000VCM as the console replacement, while leaving our other analog hardware in place. 32 channels of Apogee DA and AD-16x A/D/A conversion were selected to serve as the bridge between the analog and digital realms. The studio also features a Mac Pro-based DAW with 12GB of RAM and 5TB of disk space running MOTU Digital Performer, Apple Logic Studio, Avid Pro Tools, and a number of other audio applications.

The installation was completed on July 16, 2010 and the system has proven itself to my satisfaction in it's first year of operation.

We were recording Danny Rongo overdubbing bass and some vocals for the song "Silence Is Consent", a 2010 Garden State Film Festival music video entry. It was a great lead-in to Burzynski, the feature film of this exhibition block.
